Jaipur is the first planed city of medieval India. The city is divided into nine blocks and the royal palace is located in the city center. In the 1700s the capital was shifted from Amer to Jaipur.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was a great thinker, together with architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and Shilpa Shastra, made the walls of Jaipur city, which is built on the principles of architectural science, Indian architecture.
History of City Palace
The palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. As most of the structures in Jaipur, this palace also shows the fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture.
City Palace Complex is spread over a large area in a seventh part of the old city of Jaipur. It has a sequence of gardens, buildings and courtyards, temples and museums, which gives it a grand view, which reflects its historical importance and splendid royal grace. Its outer boundary was created by King Jai Singh and other structures to add charm to it by his heirs. It also worked as the residence of the former Maharaja of Jaipur.
How to reach City Palace
City Palace is situated in the middle of Jaipur’s old city wall. There is ample transport in the palace. If you want to experience the Indian way of travel, you can visit the local site or take a rickshaw.
City Palace Entry & Timings
The City Palace is open from 9 am to 30 pm. It will take about one and a half to two hours for the whole castle to rotate. They provide an overall ticket which allows you to enter the museum and the fort of Jaigad.
City Palace is the most beautiful section for just a few selected people. Chandrayaan Mahal is a four-storey building behind this area, accessible to the general public. The entry fee in this area is INR 2500 but is definitely worth a visit.
It is advisable to take a guide or an audio guide because the castle is very rich in its history. Audio guides are available for INR 200 and can be taken from the main gate.
Best time to visit City Palace
The best time to visit Jaipur is between October and March when it is relatively cold. There are several segments in the City Palace which are open and therefore it is best to visit this place before a sunny day.

The palace of the whole city is wonderful. It is a paradise for art and history lovers. There is a section dedicated to the artisans of Jaipur where you can buy souvenirs. They have traditional paintings made from wood replicas of organic colors and monuments. This is the right way to take the memory back home.
